Get into character - Jason
Angel at the Paradise Hotel
Aneurin BarnardHello and welcome,
Building on my last two posts I want to start to introduce the main characters in Angel at the Paradise Hotel.
Stepping onto the stage first is JASON
Who would play Jason in a film? Aneurin Barnard!
Yes, he's Welsh (from Bridgend not far from my native Cardiff, yay!!) but he'd make a brilliant Greek Jason. I loved watching him on TV recently in The Catch.
If you have read my previous post you will already know that Jason is a hotelier. Actually, he's the manager of the Paradise Hotel. Oh, yes! Now you're almost getting in the door.
Unlike a lot of his peers Jason is very well educated and speaks impeccable English.
His Achilles heel is his love of money. And he is quite ruthless in chasing every extra bit of profit.
Since he took over running the hotel it has become very successful - which puts him in the spotlight. Many local businesses copy his way of doing things.
He does, though, attract a lot of jealousy from the local men. They'd love nothing better than to see him toppled.

You probably know someone like Jason
If you do there's a strong chance that you don't like them much. But I have to tell you that I have found much to like in Jason.
You see, Jason, like all the other characters in Angel at the Paradise Hotel, has been living with me since 1992. The various characters slowly emerged in the pages of numerous notebooks written with pens in all colours of the rainbow. Over the years these scribblings were transferred to a succession of computers. (I've written other novels since I began this one. But this, my sort of 'pet project' has been a real work in progress. Gone With the Wind took Margaret Mitchell 16 years to write, as I recall, so I'm not alone in this pursuit of perfection.)

It's quite a process bringing characters to life on a page. The starting point with each of mine were pages and pages of their personal history. The more you come to know them, the easier it is to describe their depths in a few words.
So, I have come to know and understand Jason, and my other characters, very well. And I am very fond of them all. They are, though, rather a mixed bunch. Nothing boring in this novel I can assure you!
Will you come to like Jason and wish him well? I very much hope so!
